Beagle Orthopaedic

Carbon & Climate

Beagle Orthopaedic are the UK’s leading manufacturer of orthopaedic bracing, combining expert craftsmanship with advanced manufacturing technology to deliver high-quality solutions that enhance patient wellbeing. As a trusted NHS supplier, sustainability sits alongside their commitment to quality, innovation and long-term growth.

Challenge and Opportunity

As a product-based business with complex supply chains, understanding their emissions wasn’t straightforward. Beagle had no existing carbon reporting in place and, as an NHS supplier, needed a compliant Carbon Reduction Plan under PPN 006. They needed it to be credible and to reflect how their business operates, not just a document produced to satisfy a procurement requirement.

Approach & Solution

We measured Scope 1, 2, and five categories of Scope 3. For a manufacturer like Beagle, upstream distribution is a significant part of the picture, so a key focus was working with the team to collect real activity data rather than relying on spend-based estimates. Data collection was a substantial part of the process and we worked closely with Beagle to identify how to extract the data it in a usable way. The result was a footprint that accurately reflects Beagle’s operations.

Now heading into their second year, the process is more streamlined, the data is more refined and initiatives tailored.

Results & Impact

Beagle now has a complete, compliant PPN 006 Carbon Reduction Plan and net zero targets in place. They have a clear picture of where their highest emissions sit, particularly around distribution, and a credible baseline from which to measure progress year on year.

The Beagle Orthopaedic logo features "Beagle" in large orange letters and "ORTHOPAEDIC" in smaller grey letters underneath, reflecting the company's commitment to ESG and energy efficiency.

“We knew we needed a Carbon Reduction Plan but weren’t sure where to start. 5D made the process straightforward and made sure the data reflected our business rather than just ticking a box. They were on hand to answer questions at any point. We now have a clear picture of where we stand and what we need to do next.”
