Challenge and Opportunity

As a service-based business with a largely remote workforce, the majority of Cegeka’s emissions come from employees working from home. Initially this was calculated using assumptions, which meant the footprint wasn’t as accurate or useful as it could be. The opportunity was to get closer to the real picture and bring employees into the process along the way.

Approach & Solution

We developed a home working questionnaire to collect energy use data directly from employees, replacing assumptions with real activity data. It gave us a more accurate footprint and opened a practical conversation with staff about home energy use and what the organisation could do to support improvements.

Over four years, the scope of reporting has expanded steadily, starting with Scope 1 and 2 and growing to cover five categories of Scope 3. Each year the data gets more refined, the process more embedded and employee engagement stronger.

Results & Impact

Cegeka UK now has a carbon footprint that reflects their business operations, updated annually with increasingly reliable data. The questionnaire has become an established part of their process and employees are engaged and aware of the company’s sustainability work in a way they weren’t at the start.
